What is RocoMamas?

RocoMamas is a leading restaurant chain in South Africa known for its American fast-food-themed menu, including burgers, fries, and chicken wings. What has made the restaurant especially popular online is the RocoMamas Fire Wings Challenge, which continues to attract contestants and curious patrons to its outlets.

The now-viral social media challenge usually takes place at RocoMamas Campus Square, located in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. This branch is known for its mouthwatering menu items such as Smashburgers, Mofo Hot Chicken Wings, and Rockin’ Ribs.

But recently, it has become better known for something far more intense, a spicy food challenge that has taken over TikTok and Instagram.

What Is the RocoMamas Hot Wings Challenge?

The RocoMamas Fire Wings Challenge is simple in design but brutal in execution.

Participants are directed to a table inside the restaurant and served a steaming plate consisting of:

  • 10 extremely spicy chicken wings
  • A portion of fries
  • A glass of cold Sprite

The challenge is straightforward: Finish everything in 10 minutes or less.

If successful, contestants walk away without paying for the meal and receive branded merchandise, most commonly a “Fire Wings Challenge” cap, which serves as a symbolic badge of victory.

The meal typically costs around 200 South African Rand (approximately KSh 1,600 or USD 12), meaning winners also effectively eat for free.

Why the Challenge Went Viral on TikTok

The challenge has exploded on TikTok largely because of what contestants go through in real time, and the internet can’t seem to get enough of it.

At the RocoMamas Campus Square location, contestants often arrive with overconfidence and arrogance, with a few showing actual respect for the challenge.

The majority laugh with friends, flex for the camera, and confidently declare victory before showtime.

But that bravado rarely survives the first few minutes.

Once the plate of heavily spiced wings is placed in front of them, the tone shifts almost instantly. Things quickly tilt towards pain, as the first bites trigger an overwhelming wave of heat that most participants clearly underestimate.

Midway through the challenge, the capitulation is cash money. The early confidence collapses into a brutal battle of will; contestants begin to slow down, pause between bites, and quietly reassess every life decision that led them to that table.

It is at this point:

  • Contestants’ eyes water uncontrollably as the spice intensifies
  • Faces flush red
  • Tears stream down cheeks despite attempts to stay composed
  • Contenstant suddenly reaches for the Sprite glass as if it holds a temporary rescue
  • Desparately gasps for air between bites as neanderthal self-preservation kicks in

What makes the clips especially addictive on TikTok is this predictable arc from confidence to satisfying humiliation.

The same people who walked in laughing are often the ones seen quietly defeated, crying, and staring at the remaining wings in disbelief.

Participants Say “It Felt Like Self-Harm”

Some contestants have jokingly described the challenge as an act of self-inflicted suffering due to how overwhelming the spice level becomes.

Before participating, contestants are reportedly required to sign a liability waiver form, which shows how intense the challenge is to human oral cavities.

Losers who fail the challenge must pay for the meal, adding to the humiliation when their attempt is captured on camera.

In some unverified rumors circulating online, people joke that contestants who fail and cannot pay immediately are asked to perform small restaurant tasks, such as peeling onions.

While not confirmed, these stories add to the widespread culture in African restaurants where failure to settle bills may send you to a serious kitchen shift.

Some arrive fully prepared with cheering squads to push them through, but are momentarily overwhelmed by the spice intensity, forcing them to quit.

Despite the trendy losing videos, others have made light work of it. Influencers such as Mzansi Adventures have gone viral after completing the “nuclear plate” with time to spare, becoming heroes overnight.

Why Food Challenges Like This Go Viral

The RocoMamas challenge is part of a larger global food challenge culture that originated from American eating competitions.

In the United States, restaurants popularized extreme food challenges under what is often referred to as the “breakfast challenge” or “man vs food” culture.

This trend has since evolved globally, with restaurants in Europe and beyond now serving oversized portions and extreme spice dishes designed for viral attention.

The competitive eating culture has also been shaped by YouTubers who have built entire careers around food challenges.

Well-known names include Beard Meets Food and Randy Santel, who regularly take on enormous food portions on camera, often in front of cheering crowds, building global audiences in the millions.

Their influence has helped normalize food challenge culture, inspiring restaurants worldwide, including in Africa, to experiment with similar concepts.

This combination makes it perfect for TikTok’s algorithm, which favors emotional, high-engagement content.
