Where to Stay Near Lake Turkana: My Personal Experience

In late February, I embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Northern Kenya to cover the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Turkana branch elections in Lodwar.

Departing Nairobi on a rainy afternoon, I set off toward the wild northwest, a land blessed with breathtaking scenery and rare landmarks.

On the sidelines of the elections, I seized the opportunity to explore the vast county of Turkana and see for myself the stories I had long heard about the region.

One of the highlights I most anticipated was visiting Lake Turkana, the world’s largest permanent desert and alkaline lake.

From Kapenguria, through Kainuk and Lokichar, and finally to Lodwar, I couldn’t take my eyes off the scenic route.

Towering mountains, treacherous gorges, winding rivers of Pokot land, and the inviting arid plains of Turkana were awe-inspiring at every turn.

I arrived in Lodwar late in the afternoon of the second day, after spending the night in Eldoret, exhausted but exhilarated by the adventure.

While the region is developing rapidly, quality resort accommodations remain scattered, with most clustered in Lodwar and its surrounding areas.

Lodwar town, sprawling and divided into two main areas along the banks of the famous Turkwel River, offers a range of accommodation options, from upmarket facilities to decent, affordable lodgings.

Compared with other major cities and towns in Kenya, such as Nairobi, the hotels in Lodwar are remarkably affordable.

My scouting took me through the far reaches of the town, including the Tobong Lore Grounds and the Kanamkemer outskirts, to find the best places to stay.

Here are the five best hotels in Lodwar, based on my firsthand experience, along with their rates, locations, and features.

Lodwar may be remote, but it offers a surprising range of accommodation options for travelers heading to Lake Turkana, the world’s largest permanent desert lake and one of Kenya’s most fascinating natural landmarks.

From modern hotels to quiet tented camps, the facilities listed above provide convenient bases for exploring the town and visiting the lake’s western shores.

One important thing you should prepare for, however, is Turkana’s intense heat.

Lodwar is one of the hottest towns in Kenya, and even at night, temperatures can remain very high.

In some hotels that rely mainly on fans, the heat can make sleeping uncomfortable.

For travelers who prefer cooler rooms, properties such as Stegra Hotel offer air-conditioned rooms, which can make a significant difference after a long day of travel across the arid landscapes of northern Kenya.
